Attack on Titan Episode 16 Recap

Right off the bat, let’s start with some disclaimers. THIS IS NOT FOR CHILDREN, NOR THE SQUIMISH. I know, I know – you’re a paragon of steely resolve, your sinews are made from Wolverines cigar gristle and are Ford tough. Congratulations. HOWEVER, this is an anime that is brutal right out of the gate. That’s what makes it so interesting; this is a world where humanity is on its last leg and the audience is left on the edge of their seats hoping that SOMEBODY is going to survive.

Obviously major spoilers, we will be looking at the series in depth, poking at nooks and crannies and looking at characters and plot and why AoT has gained such insane popularity. There will be cursing, there will be blood. Some of the screen caps may be graphic (I will actually try to not and be too graphic with them, I don’t know who is looking at my blog).

Attack on Titan is a unique and phenomenal story which includes many elements; fantasy, mystery, politics, military campaigns, camaraderie, sacrifice and hope. If you can get past the brutal nature of the narrative its worth watching. All right, let’s get into it:

Attack on Titan Episode 16 Recap: What Should I Do Now?/ Eve of Counteroffensive Part 3

Last time we had a nice little episode introducing the Levi Squad, a recap on how Titans work, and an introduction to Hanji’s scientific work which would have had a major breakthrough if the caught Titans had not been killed by an unknown assailant.

Now we begin this episode with an investigation of the 3D gear the soldiers use, which apparently will tell whether or not it was used the night of the murders? Can we take a moment of ironic appreciation that the soldiers are under suspicion of murdering a Titan ?

Thank you.

However along with the investigation now is the time for the cadets to choose which branch they will be going into. Given all that’s happened, all that they’ve seen it almost seems obvious that they will steer clear of the Scouting Branch, as that particular branch deals almost exclusively with Titans on a daily basis and has the highest risk factor.

The terror of the Titans is still fresh in their minds our Mains are having second thoughts.

This is a good Jean episode as well; he started out as a self-centered, arrogant brash young man who wanted an easy life with the Military Police. After everything he’s been through, all the things he’s seen and the friends he has lost, Jean is having a change of heart.

He’s decided to join the Scouting Legion and place his bets on Eren, though I’m sure it galls him to do so.

We also have a really sweet Armin and Annie moment as she backhandedly gives him a compliment of ‘you’re weak but you are brave’.

Armin, poor sweet stupid Armin, says that Annie has a soft squishy side underneath that hard exterior after all. Annie will NOT be joining the Scouting Legion. Erwin drops by to give a speech to the graduating cadets and doesn’t sugar coat it. Basically he boils it down to

YOU’RE ALL GONNA DIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEE -Oh, and Eren’s basement holds the key to salvation.

Interesting speech. Our smarty pants Armin realizes that Erwin is up to something, revealing sensitive information like that. Ohhhh, intrigue.

Erwin continues to lay out details in the plan to take back Wall Maria. Since the attack on Trost has destroyed the main gate and pathways carved out by the Scouting Legion they will now have to take a longer, more dangerous and new path to Wall Maria. He ends his speech with

YOU’RE ALL GONNA DIIIIEEEEE. So please join the Scouting Legion Today!

All who remain in the audience will be those who join the Scouting Corps. You can imagine that there is a veritable stampede as the majority of the newly trained scouts head for the exit. Who do you suppose remains?

Why our Mains, of course – minus Annie. All of them struggle terribly with the terror of the Titans, and the experience of the last few days. To choose to stay is extraordinary, a true mark of amazing courage. To join the Scout Corps is almost a guaranteed death sentence.

So our Mains begin their life under the Scouting Regiment which is…kind of boring so far.

Uh oh, rando character with vague doughy character design? I think we just found a red shirt. After all, it’s been AGES since someone has been eaten by a Titan, I’m sure within the next episode or two we’ll be knee high in gore again.

So the Mains prepare for scouting expedition, while Eren also prepares, as it’s all about Eren. Basically. Eren turning into a Titan, Eren’s basement. Eren Eren Eren.

Aw, class reunion – Eren meets up with the Mains again and Jean asks some pretty important questions like,

‘Is Eren worth dying for, because that’s exactly what we are doing.’

Pretty good question, considering. Also considering the fact that the last time Eren transformed he tried to swat Mikasa like a bug. Doesn’t inspire a lot of trust, you understand.

Well, let’s end this episode with an intense Erwin calling out the Scouting Corps expedition to EXPEDIATE . FORWARD TO GLORY.
